General Info

Tucked away in Miyajimacho, Iwamura Momijiya feels like a quiet pause in the middle of one of Japan’s most visited destinations. Located at 〒739-0525 Hiroshima, Hatsukaichi, Miyajimacho, 中江町304−1, this Japanese sweets restaurant has a calm, unhurried atmosphere that instantly makes you want to slow down and savor the moment.

The menu here centers around Hiroshima’s beloved traditional sweets, with a strong focus on もみじまんじゅう. Watching these maple-leaf-shaped treats being prepared adds to the experience, especially when you know what’s coming next. The classic もみじ饅頭 粒あん delivers a deeply comforting bite, filled with rich こしあん that’s smooth, balanced, and not overly sweet. For those who enjoy texture, つぶもみじ brings a satisfying contrast with its chunkier red bean filling, making each bite feel hearty and nostalgic.

One of the small but thoughtful touches that stands out is the お茶のサービス. A warm cup of tea arrives naturally with your sweets, enhancing the flavors and encouraging you to take your time. It’s the kind of detail that quietly elevates the entire visit, especially if you choose to dine in. The seating area is peaceful and quiet, making it easy to relax after walking through Miyajima’s busy streets.

In terms of service, the experience feels smooth and considerate from start to finish. The restaurant offers table service, allowing guests to enjoy their sweets without feeling rushed. Practical needs are also well covered, with a wheelchair-accessible car park available nearby. For modern convenience, NFC mobile payments are accepted, blending tradition with ease in a way that feels natural rather than forced.

As a Japanese sweets restaurant, Iwamura Momijiya keeps things focused and authentic. The location is easy to fit into a day of sightseeing, and the overall vibe aligns well with the reflective mood Miyajima is known for. Many visitor reviews mention how the simplicity of the menu allows the quality of each item to shine, and that sense of confidence is felt with every dish served. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick treat or sitting down to enjoy tea and sweets, the experience feels genuine, calm, and thoughtfully crafted.

What customers say?

“ I was stunned when I had a Momiji Manju at here for its sensitive taste and delicate sweetness. Momiji Manju is a very famous sweet from this Miyajima island, or widely known as a product from Hiroshima area, but nothing is like the ones from this shop, I felt. To me it was a MUST have and I would definitely come back here when I have another opportunity. The place is not far from the exit gate of the famous Itsukushima Shrine visitor course and you might want to look for the flags like attached photo alongside a small river there - after passing a bit busy area with shops. You can buy one piece at 100JPY which is still hot right after the kitchen and if you like it, you can go for a larger package with multiple pieces for takeaway. The shop could also arrange domestic shipping on your request. They would ask whether you like "Tsubu Ann" style or "Koshi Ann" style. You could buy each and see for yourself, or simply choose "Koshi Ann" as this shop was the pioneer for serving it since 1930s. ”

“ Great little shoppe. Seems to be family run since the Meiji era. Friendly staff all wearing striped shirts. Momoji are now 100 yen. Not sure if that is inflation or peak season pricing, but definitely still worth it - and enjoy the free tea ”

- Keith Alverson -

“ Fresh Japanese sweets for ¥100 a piece. I bought a few to eat at the beach along with a box and the individually wrapped pieces were still warm and fluffy when I made it down the street. Definitely recommended, staff was very friendly too. ”

- Tristan Harvey -

“ Nice service ! Kind and friendly staffs ! One little momiji manju is 90 yen and its served with hot tea and warm stove ! Come have a rest here ! ”

- Peter Channel -

“ Japanese sweet with red bean inside is good. The price us 90 yen/piece. ”

- Jay W -

“ One of the originals and probably the best on the island (note their awards). They have a little area you can sit and eat opposite. We liked the sweets with the red bean skins on (the yellow wrapper), so after trying a couple of different flavours each, we walked away with a cute 6 pack of the yellow sweets ”

- Karl Chong -

“ Fresh hot cakes and free tea. This is the stuff off legends! ”

- Erik Ebbinkhuijsen -

“ Wonderful little store in Miyajima! You can see the process of making the cookies from the window. The filling is made out of sweet red bean paste. We ate them still warm and fresh! ”
